"Socratic Circles"
Students are divided into 2 groups equally. One group is to be the inner circle, they will focus on the content of text. The other group is to be the outer circle, they will guide the inner circle's conversation by providing more information to keep the conversation going.
"Fishbowl Discussion"
Somewhat like the above strategy but the inner circle is smaller while the outer circle is large. In the inner circle there is an empty chair for someone in the outer circle can sit in if they want to have an input in the conversation. When someone fills in the empty chair, another person must leave, so there must always be an empty chair available.
Initial question or topic comes from teacher or student.
