Here are some activities I will be doing in the beginning of the year to get to know the students. It is very important to me to know who your child is that way they feel comfortable in my classroom for the rest of the year.

"Beautiful Moments"
"Beautiful Moments" is a photography activity one of my past teachers told me about. The teacher supplies each student's family with a disposable camera (hopefully they are still around), the family will have the camera for a week, taking pictures of their child (student) and what he/she does outside of school. Pictures can consist of siblings, parents, pets, favorite hobbies, favorite foods, or things the child dislikes. The pictures are to show the teacher something they would not know about their student. Once the week is up, the parents will develop the pictures and bring them to the parent-teacher conference to talk about the pictures that show their child's life outside of the classroom. This activity is great because for once the teacher is not teaching the parents or student something, the roles are reversed, the teacher is learning about their student.
"Me in a Bag"
Each student gets to bring in a bag filled with at least 5 things that describes them (favorite book/movie, a ball if they like sports etc). They will present their items to the entire class and teacher, explaining why they chose the items they did. This activity teaches the students about one another.
Both the teacher and students participate in this activity.

"M&M Activity"
Students are to work in groups for this activity. Each group is given a bag of M&Ms. They randomly select a color from the bag, each color has a different requirement (see picture on side). Give students time to talk within groups about each other, then bring the class back together. Each student will tell the rest of the class something new they learned about their fellow classmate based off of the color of the M&M they picked.
